Guide Review - Hershey's Sugar Free Special Dark Chocolate
Looking at the brown and burn orange wrapper of the Hershey's Sugar Free Special Dark, the outside certainly looked like a Hershey's chocolate product except for the large "sugar free" logo prominently displayed on the front. I was a little skeptical of the Hershey's Sugar Free Special Dark given how traditionally strange the notion is of a sugar free chocolate, but I quickly found out to my delight that there were actually very few differences between the sugared and sugar free versions. First, the appearance of the sugar free version looked the part with the 2-inch by 1-inch rectangular shape and rich dark chocolate color. Second, the Sugar Free Special Dark had the same sweet chocolate scent when you open a chocolate bar. Third, the chocolate had good consistency and smoothness as I bit into the bar. In fact, the chocolate still had the familiar soft crunch of biting into a regular Hershey's bar. Finally and most important, the Hershey's Sugar Free Special Dark had a wonderful dark chocolate flavor without any discernible sugar alternative aftertaste. There would be nothing more disappointing than expecting a rich chocolate flavor and then having it go flat with a strange aftertaste.
Overall, the Hershey's Sugar Free Special Dark is a good product. The product smells, tastes, and feels good in your mouth. It really is everything you would expect from a Hershey's chocolate product except for two things: (1) on the positive side, the sugar free version has 25 percent less calories per serving than the sugared version and the most of the carbs are from sugar alcohols; and (2) on the negative side, since sugar alcohols are being used the chocolates may have a laxative effect on those sensitive to sugar alternatives. This laxative effect is not that uncommon with sugar alternatives, so it is not surprising that even on the Hershey's bag that it says on the top, "Enjoy in Moderation."
