Full Review

Brownies are one of my favorite desserts. With their rich chocolate flavor, brownies are great by themselves, warmed up with vanilla ice cream, or even being dipped in a chocolate fondue. In addition, brownies are easy to make with so many "boxed" versions available from makers such as Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines, and even Ghiradelli. Today, I will be reviewing one of those boxed versions - Pillsbury Sugar Free Chocolate Fudge Brownie Mix.

When using boxed products, it is important to have a good balance between the ease in making the product and the general quality of the end product. The Pillsbury Sugar Free Chocolate Fudge Brownie Mix certainly gets the ease in making the product part right because making the sugar free brownies is easy. All you need is 1/3 cup oil, 3 tablespoons of water, 1 egg, and a baking pan. Just use the easy to follow instructions (there are only three steps) and about 30 minutes later you will have sugar free chocolate fudge brownies!

Once the Pillsbury Sugar Free Chocolate Fudge Brownies are made, you will be hard pressed to wait to dive right in. The brownies have a sweet chocolate smell and the appearance looks spot on. There is a rich dark chocolate color with the wrinkly textured top people have come to expect with brownies. When biting into the brownies, one will immediately notice a more cake-like consistency. As you get to the middle of the brownie, there is a little more of a chewy texture. However, with a little tweaking from the instructions and the baking time the consistency would likely change to more of your liking. Flavor-wise, the Pillsbury Sugar Free Chocolate Fudge Brownies are also spot on with a good chocolate fudge flavor and no sugar free aftertaste. However, I did notice a slightly grainy feeling on my tongue after swallowing the brownie which was a letdown.

Overall, I thought the Pillsbury Sugar Free Chocolate Fudge Brownie Mix was a good product if you are looking for a slightly healthier brownie mix. The total calories and carbs are only a little lower so I would not expect much of a health benefit. However, the brownies do taste good and are easy for anyone to make. In fact with with a few toppings and some creativity, you can make something different such as coconut pecan brownie bites!
